How accurate is an abdominal ultrasound in determining a due date in early pregnancy?
I went to my first appt last week (higher risk so I had to go early) and we weren\’t to sure on the first day of my LMP but we figure it to be about 04/22/08. Because I had an ectopic in January they did an ultrasound right away. This was June 10, 2008. He did the on abdominal ultrasound(thank god not the probe) and found the pregnancy interutero and got a heartbeat of 114 beats per minute(yeah!!). Then he put it at about 6 weeks based on the size. But I keep hearing that it is odd he was able to determine so much so early on especially without using the transvaginal (eek) ultrasound. Is it possible they are off on the date or is my baby just highly audible? Plus I\’m already starting to show and have had all the symtoms for atleast 3 and 1/2 weeks.
The ultrasound tech figured the date by measuring something in the sac.
When physicians (and patients) have trouble with LMPs (irregular menses, LMP was from the last pregnancy…), we usually request that an ultrasound be done to \”date\” the pregnancy. Most physicians nowadays also request USGs even for their patients with accurate LMPs and compare age of gestation (AOG) by LMP versus AOG by ultrasound. There is usually a 1-2 week difference between the 2 (LMP is earlier).
While first trimester ultrasounds are usually done transvaginally, it is possible to have it done trans-abdominally – as long as the sac is visible.
What your technician measured to \”date\” your pregnancy is called the \”Crown-Rump Length\” or CRL. Sonologists have charts and tables that say what CRL measurement corresponds to what AOG.
I think you are very blessed! Your little one is already shouting \”Here I am, Mom! I\’m perfectly fine in here!\”
PS – if you were 6 weeks AOG via USG last June 10th, you are about 7 weeks and 1 day today (June 18). Your due date (probably they put this in your ultrasound report) is January 27, 2009 (by LMP), Feb 10, 2009 (by ultrasound). You conceived on or around May 6th. April 22 would be a very good estimate of your LMP.
Check out the calculator I used (pretty reliable): http://www.intmed.mcw.edu/clincalc/pregnancy.html
