Problems With Dating Your Boss

Boss/Employee relationship problems. What kind of a “Boss” is this?
I have been employed for 15 months and have earned 2 weeks vacation. I requested four days off, with a 30 day notice. My boss, whom I’ve had problems with in understanding what makes her “tick”, responded by e-mail. I requested April 17, 18, 21 and 22. I have deadlines to meet and I am aware of, and I don’t feel 4 days out of the office will hamper my ability to meet them. I am 52 yrs old, with 35 years experience in the office setting. My boss replied stating I had these deadlines and, I quote: “You have requested vacation time-I will only approve if your work is completed and up to date.” She is not the owner of the company we work for. She is very difficult to get along with, as other department managers have had the same type of problems in understanding her. We know she is a control freak.
My question is: What type of person in a leadership position responds so demeaningly? (sp) And, besides wanting to respond in ways I can’t, how should I reply, professionally?
She never gave you a straight answer yes or no. She was incorrect in that sense. She has to give you time to make arrangements for your vacation, she cannot wait until the last moment for approval. Your company must have some sort of policy on how far in advance she must approve your vacation days.
She sounds like a good manager who is diligent (perhaps too diligent) in meeting and keeping deadlines. She however needs to be able to effectively deal with employees and her EM did not give you a “Yes” or “No” answer as to if you had the days off. You need to go directly to her for an answer. No more EMs. You have the right to an answer. If you can’t get it from her go above her. You do have that right. You sound intelligent and seem to have experience in your field. Don’t let her push you around, I hate to say, it sounds like she may be trying to do that.
Good luck!!
