How Long Is A Long Life Product Allowed To Be Displayed On A Supermarket Shelf Before Its Use-by Date?

…for example chocolate. If you have information on this, please also state what country you live in. I bought two dark chocolate bars today that i intended to use for cooking and on opening them they smelled very slightly off. The use-by date says 08.10. (made my usual mistake of not paying attention before purchasing). I am wondering if it was legal for them to display that. So i wonder about what your country\’s regulations say.

If you are in Canada, there aren\’t any laws prohibiting the sale of expired food. Even if it\’s obviously bad. It\’s a buyer-beware situation.

the longest item with shelf life is cereal. these things have a shelf life of a year.. and i live in california. and they dont sell any expired food here. the closest they come to it is selling reduced items that expire same day or within the next 2 days. these items will be on clearence for very cheap. but the night they expire they are removed and tossed out.
